An Invitation to Nutrition and Nourishment

Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food.

—Hippocrates

Given the powerful role that nutrition plays in our health, it makes sense that this is where we are going to start our journey! What we choose to eat has a direct impact on the way we feel right now and our long-term risk for chronic disease. According to the American Heart Association, the National Cancer Institute, the World Cancer Research Fund and the World Health Organization, more than 90% of type 2 diabetes, 80 percent of heart disease, and a third of all cancers could be prevented just by following a healthy diet and lifestyle. Those are staggering statistics. If I told you I had a pill that could cut your chance of having cancer by 30 percent and a heart attack by 80 percent without any harmful side effects, would you take it? Of course you would! While there’s no guarantee that a healthy diet will prevent you from ever getting sick, I think most of us want to do whatever we can to stack the odds in our favor.

In this Nutrition and Nourishment section, we will go deep into the role of carbohydrates, fats, proteins in human health, as well as discuss the evidence behind gluten-free and low FODMAP diets. Then I will share some tips and ideas for using spices and culinary herbs in cooking and how these powerhouse antioxidant and anti-inflammatory plants can be used to not only improve the taste of food but also how you can use them for treating common health problems. Next, I will show you what is in my pantry and challenge you to do your own pantry makeover!

You ready? Let’s get started!
